Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig, manager Hansi Flick spoke about his backline during his weekly press conference.
While Flick’s group of defenders will be shorthanded, the 56-year-old is optimistic about how his group will do. Both Alphonso Davies and Jerome Boateng will miss the contest due to suspensions. Davies picked up a red card against VfB Stuttgart, while Boateng will be held out because of yellow card accumulation.
The absence of Davies will create room for Lucas Hernandez to join the starting XI and Flick knows the Frenchman will bring his A-game.
“He will definitely play. I also know his statistics,” said Flick (as captured by FCBayern.com). “That’s a good condition for the game. Lucas is an outstanding professional who is very highly regarded in the team and the coaching staff. He does his job very well and is very focused. When he plays, he always brings 100 percent.”
Many are expecting to see a back-four of Lucas-Hernandez-David Alaba-Niklas Süle-Benjamin Pavard. If not for that aforementioned suspension, Boateng would have probably been starting alongside Alaba at center-back.
“We have played more often without Alphonso Davies,” Flick said on missing Davies. “We will be able to field a back-four and adjust to Leipzig’s speed. I’m confident.”
Flick also thinks Süle is up to the task.
“Jérôme was in very good form, Alphonso Davies always does us good with his qualities. They are important players,” said Flick. “Niklas we have slowly introduced, he will be able to play. We are very confident about that.”
In addition, Flick has thoroughly enjoyed Boateng as part of the squad this season.
“Jerome is ten years at Bayern Munich, has won the triple twice. He had a super increase from a difficult situation,” Flick said. “He was one of the guarantors that we won the six titles. He has worked hard on himself to reach this level again.”
