Update [7:05AM EST]: Kimmich speaks on decision
Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich gave a statement to Sport Bild on his decision to represent himself in negotiations:
“This is a conscious decision that I made last year,” said Kimmich. “I have decided for myself that I want to stand up for my values and my views even more and to live up to my personal responsibility. I am also convinced that I can best represent my own position.”
Bayern Munich had better hope that Joshua Kimmich is not as hard-nosed of a negotiator as he is in the team’s midfield.
Kimmich, who is entering a key period for extending his contract, has ditched his agent, fair-sport GmbH, and will negotiate on his own. Kimmich is about to take his own brand of intensity to the boardroom.
For his part, Kimmich wants to be paid in the same echelon as Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer, and Thomas Müller, which is reportedly in the €15 million (or more) stratosphere. Kimmich’s current deal ends in 2023, but both the player and the club are eager to get a deal done:
Following his strong and consistent performances, Kimmich wants to join the list of Bayern's top earners like Lewandowski, Neuer and Müller (all earning over €15m). The midfielder considers that he belongs in this category [Bild] https://t.co/1rU9F8Z0MP— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) April 15, 2021
Kimmich and sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidizic staring each other down from opposite sides of the board room will be a sight to behold, but just imagine for a second that there is swerve. What if — hear me out — Kimmich is there to represent himself...and to also negotiate a new deal for Hansi Flick?
Now that would he high drama....
