Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger recently said that he thinks Manchester City’s İlkay Gündoğan is currently Germany’s best player. That would seem to exclude quite a few Bayern Munich candidates — Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Müller among others.
When asked at a recent press conference if Rüdiger’s assessment was correct, Gündoğan kind of laughed off the question and said it was not a good idea to argue with Rüdiger:
Question: @ToniRuediger says you are the best German player. Is that correct? Answer @IlkayGuendogan: „You should never contradict Toni, that's dangerous" #MrWhippy pic.twitter.com/806Oya7Lz4

The question, however, is sort of interesting. If you look at Germany’s international roster and then factor in a few players who are not currently in the national team mix, you could make a case that Gündoğan is absolutely among the top players, but is he the best that Germany can currently offer?
That is where it gets murky...unless, of course, you are Rüdiger, who seems to already have his mind made up on the situation.
Let’s take a quick poll to see where the Bavarian Football Works community comes out on this issue:
