It could be said that Bayern Munich played a major role in helping Germany down Iceland 3-0.
Leon Goretzka had a goal, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane had assists, Joshua Kimmich turned in a masterclass in the midfield, and Manuel Neuer pitched in with a clean sheet. Heck, even 18-year-old phenom Jamal Musiala got into the act with a late substitution.
Goretzka, Bayern Munich’s 26-year-old midfielder, was ecstatic to give his squad an early lead with a goal in the third minute.

“It played into our hands that we scored a goal early on. We knew what to expect, that Iceland would be very deep,” Goretzka said (as captured by the DFB). “The fact that we scored so early helped us. I’m glad to have played my part. It was important to show that there are eleven guys on the pitch who are really up for it.”
Neuer saw the game as a step in the right direction — especially given how Germany had struggled during its last international break.
“It was a positive sign. We were all looking forward to playing the first game of 2021. It was a good performance, we can build on that,” Neuer said (as captured by the DFB).
