Bayern Munich’s Hansi Flick could be facing tough decision at right-back against Borussia Dortmund

Niklas Süle has been good for Bayern Munich at right-back, but is reportedly expected to relinquish the starting role once Benjamin Pavard is full healthy and fit. However, that might not happen in time for Der Klassiker.

Per a report from kicker, Bayern Munich right-back Benjamin Pavard could return to the squad for Der Klassiker between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Should the Frenchman be deemed ready for game action, Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick could be facing a tough decision based on the recent performances from Niklas Süle at the position:

If everything goes smoothly, Benjamin Pavard increases the options for Hansi Flick before the classic against Borussia Dortmund this week after surviving the corona illness. It is quite possible, however, that the trainer will continue to trust Niklas Süle at right-back for the time being.

Süle not only effectively filled in for Pavard, but jumped over summer transfer window-signing Bouna Sarr on the squad’s depth chart. When Pavard is cleared, Sarr could find it extremely difficult to see action on the pitch.

Regardless, Süle is currently expected to get the nod as a starter against Dortmund. However, kicker also indicated that Pavard should step back into his starting role upon reaching full health and fitness:

In the near-term, Pavard is likely to return to his post. After all, Flick placed his trust in him even in weak phases and never dropped him. But why should (Flick) change something in the last successful defensive formation against the old rival from Dortmund? Especially since it remains to be seen in what condition Pavard will return after the forced break.

Whoever starts, Bayern Munich’s backline will assuredly be on notice as it will have to deal with Borussia Dortmund’s talented duo of Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho.
