Since news broke that AS Monaco was interested in bringing in Alexander Nübel on loan, Oliver Kahn has said that Bayern Munich is planning to keep hold of him to continue to serve as Manuel Neuer’s primary backup.
These rumors were largely fueled by Nübel’s agent, Stefan Backs saying earlier this month that his situation at Bayern was “unsatisfactory” and that a loan option needed to be considered for this summer. So far this season, the 24-year-old keeper has only featured twice for Bayern even though his contract stipulates that he should play at least 10 matches for the club this season. This was agreed upon when he joined from Schalke.
In the latest development per a new report from kicker, Nübel actually has the option to terminate his contract with Bayern if the 10-match condition is not met before the end of the season. At this current rate, unless Neuer picks up a serious injury, it looks increasingly likely that Nübel will not play at least eight more matches. The title race in the Bundesliga remains tight with RB Leipzig and Bayern was knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in the second round by Holstein Kiel. Not to mention, Bayern is in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Nübe’s chances of playing are exceedingly scarce.
It’s obvious Nübel would play more regualrly if he were to go on loan to Monaco and work under Niko Kovac, but he would then risk the Bayern path of naturally working to become Neuer’s successor when his time comes to an end. It is Bayern’s long-term plan to keep hold of Nübel and mold him to become Neuer’s replacement, so the 24-year-old also has that to consider. Not to mention, Kahn has also recently revealed that Bayern hasn’t ruled out another contract extension for Neuer, whose current contract expires in 2023.
Per kicker, Monaco is specifically interested in a two-year loan deal for Nübel. From Bayern’s perspective, they would certainly need to invest in a viable backup for Neuer if Nübel is, in fact, loaned out and/or terminates his contract. Loris Karius, who is on loan at Union Berlin has been a name linked as well as Arminia Bielefeld’s Stefan Ortega, among others.
