A new update on the never-ending saga — it looks like Chelsea have the same problem Bayern Munich did when offering David Alaba a contract. The Austrian is looking for up to £20m a year in wages, which translates to around £400,000 a week, almost 100k more than the Blues’ highest earner N’Golo Kante.
In a report by the reliable Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph, Chelsea may be looking to extend veteran Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, as Alaba’s wage demands are far too high for them to meet. The Austrian has been linked with Real Madrid, who are also not meeting his exorbitant demands — they’re reportedly offering him a little under what Sergio Ramos makes per year, which is at least more than what Bayern offered in a contract extension earlier in the season.
If this report is true, then it’s looking increasingly likely that there’s no club out there willing to swallow Alaba’s wage demands, even if he’s an accomplished an versatile defender in his prime. Pini Zahavi might’ve sold the Alaba family some lofty promises, but they may soon find out that a potential move may not be as lucrative as once thought.
Could this sway Alaba into staying at Bayern? The answer is almost certainly not. He’ll probably accept Madrid’s offer, and go play in La Liga like he’s always wanted to. Let’s just hope he picks up a few more trophies before he leaves.
