Joshua Kimmich is irreplaceable for Bayern Munich for the last couple of seasons. Now, he has become the brain of Bayern’s midfield, especially after Thiago’s departure last summer. He keeps evolving and improving and has become a leader and a role model for his teammates.

In a recent interview with Sport 1, as captured by Abendzeitung, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge praised the midfielder and sees him as Bayern’s captain in the post Manuel Neuer era.

Rummenigge told Abendzeitung: “I think his development on and off the pitch is really very positive. He is still a young player, but he has nevertheless taken on a lot of responsibility during the Corona period — for example, with his ‘We kick Corona’ campaign, which he initiated together with Leon Goretzka. These are all things that predestine him for the position of captain.”

Kimmich himself was flattered by Rummenigge’s comments, “Of course it makes you happy when someone like Mr. Rummenigge gives you praise.”

From right-back to midfield

Joshua Kimmich started as Phillip Lahm’s successor on the right-back position, but after some time, he moved to midfield, where he also excelled. The switch was relatively easy for Kimmich. “I have often said that I like to play as ‘6’. But generally I play where the team needs me,” explained Kimmich. “You also saw that in the Champions League final.”

As right-back, Kimmich provided a world-class performance and showed the world that he is outstanding on numerous positions. He even managed to assist Kingsley Coman on the winning goal. His undisputed footballing quality, combined with his character, make him a good choice for future captain.

Joshua’s contract runs until 2023, and hopefully, we will see him playing for Bayern for a long time!
