With Thomas Müller sidelined by COVID-19, Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick has a key decision to make later today in filling out his lineup card: Who will fill the role vacated by the Raumdeuter?
The three primary contenders are Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. Choupo-Moting did not help himself with a subpar effort in Bayern Munich’s loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, while Goretzka could potentially shift up from his regular role as part of Flick’s double-pivot.
The obvious choice for Flick is Musiala, as it would allow Goretzka to maintain his normal role. The youngster, however, sounds as if he might be a little distracted these days with all of the hype surrounding his rumored contract extension and his choice for where he will play his international football.
“Normally, Musiala is always an option,” Flick said at his press conference yesterday (as captured by Abendzeitung). “However, there are also certain fluctuations in the development of young players. Jamal got into the group well. The last few weeks have been quite a lot; there has been a lot of hustle and bustle around him.”
It is clear that Flick thinks there was at least some drop-off in performance or focus with Musiala of late, but that does not necessarily mean that the 17-year-old is out of contention for a spot in the starting XI against Lazio in the squad’s Champions League match later today.
“He is on the right track again and is absolutely an issue for (today),” Flick reiterated.
