Anyone who had hopes that Bayern Munich might make a surprising run at FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi is probably going to be let down.

In an interview with Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge indicated that Messi’s mega-salary is big problem.

“I laughed when I saw Messi’s contract with Barcelona,” Rummenigge said to Corriere dello Sport (as captured by El Espanol). “I can only say congrats to him for obtaining an astronomical contract. But this salary situation needs to be changed.”

Rummenigge delved further into how COVID-19 should be the example that club use moving forward. No one foresaw a pandemic crippling the world footballing economy and clubs will have to be more responsible moving forward.

“In the last ten years we have all made mistakes, because we have spent more and more in favor of players and agents,” said Rummenigge. “The pandemic has shown that we have to back down and return to a more rational model. I hope it is possible, but it will not be easy.”

As for Messi, it appears that Paris-Saint Germain and Manchester City are the most likely destinations should he decide to leave FC Barcelona.
