One of the surprise starters for Bayern Munich against Arminia Bielefeld was Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. Typically thought of as the understudy to Robert Lewandowski, Choupo-Moting filled in for Thomas Müller.
Choupo-Moting was nowhere near as active as Müller, but did not have a bad game. Over 90 minutes, the 31-year-old only had 28 touches, but did complete 12 of 16 passes (75%), won 4 of 6 ground duels, and completed 4 of 4 dribbles.
Despite the disappointment of the draw, Choupo-Moting acknowledged that Bayern Munich got a chance to show its “fighting spirit.”
“It was a difficult game in general. Apart from the weather, Bielefeld was biting,” said Choupo-Moting (as captured by Tz). “We showed fighting spirit. The weather didn’t suit anyone. It just changes the rhythm of the game. It wasn’t easy.”
Choupo-Moting also noted that he was impressed with Bayern Munich’s collective effort in battling back and how the squad’s championship mindset propelled them to fight through a tough situation.
“We showed mentality; there are games like that,” Choupo-Moting said. “We conceded another goal right after we scored the tying goal, and that’s something you have to get over first. We can’t win every game 5-0.”
