According to a report by Sport Bild, Bayern Munich have shortlisted Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga for the midfield next season. The 18-year-old Frenchman, previously linked with Real Madrid, is almost certain to leave his club this summer as his contract enters its final year.
Camavinga plays as a defensive midfielder, and may be Bayern’s final answer to the departure of Thiago Alcantara last season. Meanwhile, Madrid likely see him as a replacement to their ageing midfield core consisting of Casemiro, Toni Kroos, and Luka Modric. With both teams financially hamstrung by the pandemic, it’ll be interesting to see if either side can actually acquire the young Frenchman, rated as one of the best midfield prospects in Ligue 1.
For Bayern, selling Corentin Tolisso may be necessary in order to afford a move for Camavinga. The club are already set to splurge over 40m euros on RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano to replace David Alaba, who is coincidentally moving to Madrid. The Blancos, meanwhile, have a number of players allegedly on their wish-list for the summer of 2021, with PSG talisman Kylian Mbappe at the top of the list. While they may be getting Alaba for free, PSG will certainly put up a fight for their star player.
Basically, neither team is in a great position to make transfers at the moment, and the Camavinga interest may be fleeting. If ghost games continue and Bayern are unable to make it very far in the Champions League this season, the bosses may decide that Joshua Kimmich is enough for the midfield and look at more pressing areas of need (like right-back).
For now, this is a transfer that seems pretty unlikely.
