Former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has selected his latest roster for Germany and there were a few surprises.
Flick brought back Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt, Paris Saint-Germain’s Julian Draxler, and SC Freiburg’s Christian Günter, but still has not selected Olympique Lyon’s Jerome Boateng.
Overall, Flick called up 27 players as opposed to the 24 we projected in our predicted squad:

How we fared with our predictions
Predicted: Attack (12)
Actual: Attack (15)
Where we hit:
- Thomas Muller, Bayern Munich
- Leroy Sane, Bayern Munich
- Serge Gnabry, Bayern Munich
- Joshua Kimmich, Bayern Munich
- Leon Goretzka, Bayern Munich
- Jamal Musiala, Bayern Munich
- Marco Reus, Borussia Dortmund
- İlkay Gündoğan, Manchester City
- Kai Havertz, Chelsea FC
- Florian Wirtz, Bayern Leverkusen
- Florian Neuhaus, Borussia Mönchengladbach
- Karim Adeyemi, RB Salzburg
Where we missed:
- Lukas Nmecha, Wolfsburg
- Julian Brandt, Borussia Dortmund
- Julian Draxler, Paris Saint-Germain
Synopsis
I didn’t think Brandt and Draxler were still on Flick’s radar, but the former Bayern Munich boss went full “wild card” with them. Both are talented and versatile and will be nice to have for depth purposes during this set of games.
Nmecha was rumored to be under consideration, but we did not think it was quite his time just yet.
Predicted: Defense (8)
Actual: Defense (8)
Where we hit:
- Niklas Sule, Bayern Munich
- Antonio Rudiger, Chelsea
- Matthias Ginter, Borussia Mönchengladbach
- Jonas Hofmann, Borussia Mönchengladbach
Ridle Baku, Wolfsburg- Thilo Kehrer, Paris Saint-Germain
- Nico Schlotterbeck, SC Freiburg
- David Raum, Hoffenheim
Where we missed:
- Christian Günter, SC Freiburg
Synopsis
Baku seems to have rattled Flick a bit as this is the second consecutive break he was not selected. Granted, he was not great when Flick called him up, but it might be the subsequent controversy that emerged between Flick and Wolfsburg that did the most damage. Günter will make his return instead of Baku. We didn’t factor Günter into the running for this round of games, but he has done enough to force his way back (especially with all of the injuries).
Predicted: Goalkeepers (3)
Actual: Goalkeepers (4)
Where we hit:
- Manuel Neuer, Bayern Munich
- Marc-Andre ter Stegen, FC Barcelona
- Bernd Leno, Arsenal FC
Where we missed:
- Kevin Trapp, Eintracht Frankfurt
Synopsis
We thought Flick would stick with three goalkeepers, but he went with four. This should be the start of the transition from Trapp to Leno, unless Leno can find a good club to transfer to where we can start this winter. A back-up at Arsenal, Leno just will not get enough game time to warrant a selection to Germany if he stays in London.
