When regular starting midfielder Leon Goretzka was unable to play against Union Berlin, many fans and pundits expected Marcel Sabitzer to step in Goretzka role in the starting XI.
Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann had other ideas, however.
Nagelsmann opted to go with oft-injured, but talented French midfielder Corentin Tolisso instead of the highly-touted former RB Leipzig player. When asked about the decision, Nagelsmann gave his rationale for Tolisso’s surprise start. Nagelsmann, though did not want to delve into the midfielder’s ongoing contract situation. Tolisso, of course, appears likely to be leaving on a free transfer next summer.
“He had many injuries, then also the coronavirus. It was just his turn to start now,” Nagelsmann said (as captured by Tz). “He has a good spirit, good power, can play different positions. I like that very much. About all the contract issues — I think this is the wrong time today. I know he has great quality.”
