Bayern Munich announced that Sydney Lohmann is set to be out for “months” following surgery on her hip. The surgery was deemed “successful”. Consider we’re already a week into October, it’s hard to see Lohmann returning before 2022.
The 21-year-old midfielder did not make the trip to Portugal this week for Bayern’s UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Benfica, and while she was on the bench, she didn’t make the field last weekend against FC Köln either.
Lohmann was one of the club’s best players last season, but she’s struggled for playing time so far this season as Bayern added more depth over the summer to bolster their squad ahead of this season’s quest for a triple.
Losing a player of Lohmann’s caliber is never a good thing, but Bayern beefed up the squad this summer in case they were hit with injuries just like this. There are some really big games coming up, and Bayern will need to be at the top of their game.
