Bayern Munich did not want to risk getting blitzed like what happened in the DFB-Pokal match against Borussia Mönchengladbach earlier in the week.
Instead of absorbing the first punch, Bayern Munich went on the attack and used a first half brace from Robert Lewandowski and another goal from Leroy Sane to get out to a comfortable lead.
Even when Union Berlin was able to battle back, Bayern Munich had an answer. Kingsley Coman and Thomas Müller added second half goals to cover up for some defensive lapses and give the Bavarians a 5-2 win that they desperately needed.
For goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, the aggressive start to the game was just what the doctor ordered.
“Today we got the start we wanted before the game. The goals we conceded were annoying, of course, but overall we’re satisfied that we have now shown a different face,” Neuer said after the match (as captured by Tz).
The Bavarians will not get much time to revel in the win, however. A Champions League match against Benfica is waiting on Tuesday.
