Bayern Munich defender Omar Richards came to Germany knowing playing time would be hard to get.
With Alphonso Davies, Lucas Hernandez, and even Josip Stanisic viable options at left-back, this season was going to be more about development in training than during games. Richards, however, got a chance to show his talent against Hoffenheim in Bayern Munich’s 4-0 victory.
In Bayern Munich’s hybrid formation (really is a back-three no matter what the team sheet says), Richards was afforded the opportunity to push up offensively while playing a strong role in the midfield and defensive areas as well. Playing more like a wing-back — and following the recent tactical and positional play of Davies — Richards got a chance to show his skill.
”I’m very happy to have got the chance in the starting eleven today and that the coaches believed in me. I’m happy with my performance and with my team. The most important thing is that we got the home win today. It is a bit of a goosebump feeling,” said Richards (as captured by FCBayern.com). “You dream of things like this as a kid, and right now I just feel like I’m living out my dreams, the Champions League game the other night, and now getting my first start for Bayern. It’s been an amazing time for me at the club, and really I just feel the support from the fans in the stadium, it’s amazing. I enjoyed every minute today.”
With his performance, Richards might get more minutes soon enough.
