Leon Goretzka recently agreed to a contract extension with Bayern Munich that will keep him playing alongside Joshua Kimmich in the squad’s midfield for years to come.

Goretzka’s deal now runs through 2026, while Kimmich also signed a new deal that will keep hi,=m in Munich through at least 2025. Make no mistake, Kimmich’s decision to stay played a huge role in convincing Goretzka that he should do the same.

“Joshua’s contract extension played a very important role for me, absolutely. Our goal was to find a solution that meant we could continue to play for Bayern in the next few years,” Goretzka told Sport Bild.

The decision, however, did not come without some outside interest. Real Madrid and Manchester United were reportedly in contact with the Germany international.

“It’s exciting when other clubs notice your performances. I take a lot of time in my decisions. Jo and I decided that our job at Bayern was not done yet and there are big things still awaiting us,” said Goretzka.

The midfielder even acknowledged that while money was, indeed, a factor in his decision, the 26-year-old knew there was lot more to making the final call on where to spend the next phase of his career.

“I don’t want to lie to anyone, money of course plays a role. But there are other incredibly important things,” Goretzka said. “Bayern gave me a great feeling and showed me a clear vision. We have a plan, a squad and a coach to a achieve maximum success.”
