Among the many summer transfers struggling to establish themselves at Bayern Munich is Douglas Costa. The 30-year-old turned in another lackluster performance against Borussia Mönchengladbach, but has not lost the confidence of manager Hansi Flick.
When asked about Costa’s effort, Flick disagreed with the insinuation that the winger has been under-performing.
“Douglas has done well,” Flick said (as captured by kicker). “He worked defensively and tried things offensively. Even though he still has to work on his fitness, he is on the right track. That’s why I don’t quite understand the question.”
Costa played 68 minutes before being subbed off for Kingsley Coman. Flick indicated that Coman was only available for a short 20-to-30 minute stint, so Costa was going to have to carry the majority of the playing time.
Costa, though, was not all of that involved in the match. Per SofaScore.com, Costa only had 28 touches and completed just 14 of his 19 passes (74%). Costa also lost possession 11 times and only won one of his three ground duels.
Clearly, it was a quiet performance from the squad’s fourth winger.
