Another season, another harsh dose of reality that Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte just does not like or appreciate Ivan Perišić.
Bayern Munich wanted to keep Perišić after the veteran winger helped the club secure a treble last season, but Inter Milan refused to lower its financial demands. This, of course, was extremely odd because there was virtually no chance that Conte was all of a sudden going to “like” Perišić and find a way to use him effectively after previously failing.
Now, Perišić is once again available and could be headed to Tottenham Hotspur per Foot Mercato (as captured by the Daily Mail):
Tottenham are locked in talks with Inter Milan over a potential loan deal for winger Ivan Perišić, according to reports. The 31-year-old spent last season with Bayern Munich, helping them win the Champions League, but has since struggled to start regularly and may be open to a short-term move.
Foot Mercato claim Jose Mourinho holds ‘great interest’ in Perišić and that discussions between both clubs are already underway. Perisic, whose contract is set to run down in June 2022, is not typically a first-choice name on Antonio Conte’s team sheet at the San Siro. Just 11 of his 21 showings so far have come from the start, and his return of two goals and a couple of assists have seen him endure a frustrating last few months. The same publication believes that Perisic has still drawn admiring glances from several clubs, however, with Tottenham said to be among his potential suitors.
Two things are clear:
- Inter Milan’s hardball act predictably came back to bite them. Why wouldn’t they have backed off their alleged €20 million figure for Perišić when they knew he was oil to Conte’s water? This is a major failure with regard to squad planning and roster vision.
- Perišić is readily available as we knew he would be.
So, given the injury history of Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry...and when factoring in Gnabry’s slump and Douglas Costa’s ineffective play....would you explore bringing back Perišić?
