RB Leipzig seem almost certain to lose Dayot Upamecano this summer. The Frenchman reportedly has a 42.5m euro release clause in his contract, and a myriad of teams around Europe are said to be vying for his signature. Chief among those clubs is Bayern Munich, who apparently lead the pack if reports are to be believed.
Despite interest from both Liverpool and Manchester United, Sky recently reported that Upamecano was in advanced talks with the Bavarian giants for a summer transfer. Now, kicker reports that Bayern coach Hansi Flick has already spoken to the Frenchman about the prospect of joining. With David Alaba set to leave the club this summer, likely to Real Madrid, the team needs defensive reinforcements. At the rumored purchase price, Upamecano fits the bill.
However, there are at least four clubs around Europe interested in signing the 22-year-old, with more teams likely to take notice as the season progresses. With the pandemic affecting finances, it could be difficult for Bayern to compete for Upamecano’s signature when the summer window opens. However, as a player he fits the system perfectly, so it’s certain that the bosses will give it their best shot.
