Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick has taken turns sending his defenders to the bench this season and Niklas Süle has certainly taken a few involuntary days off this season.
Just because Süle has occasionally found himself in the doghouse during this campaign, it does not mean that Flick has lost faith in the big man.
It is quite the contrary, in fact. It seems more as if Flick understands that the Süle quality is still there, but that the 25-year-old just needs more time to fully get back to 100% after missing most of last season with a major knee injury.
Flick called Süle “one of the best in this position, football-wise and against his man” and also indicated that he is happy with the center-back’s progress.
“For us, he is on a very good path. We’ll see how it looks on Sunday,” Flick said (as captured by Abendzeitung).
With such a heavy workload this month, Flick is carefully rotating his defenders — one of the true position groups on the team where he has superior depth on the roster — which should help keep his boys fresh and healthy as the team navigates this difficult stretch of the schedule.
