Contract extension expected for Bayern Munich phenom Torben Rhein

With the midfield depth chart potentially in flux, Bayern Munich is looking to extend Torben Rhein’s contract.

Bayern Munich’s depth chart in the midfield is exceptionally deep at the moment, but there are a lot of rumors which indicate Corentin Tolisso, Javi Martinez, and Tiago Dantas could all be joining Angelo Stiller in leaving Säbener Straße this summer.

With whispers of everyone from Florian Neuhaus to Denis Zakaria to Nicolò Barella being linked to the Bavarians, perhaps Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidzic will look in-house to help fill out his roster in a more cost-effective manner.

One of those options could be phenom Torben Rhein. Rhein is considered one of Germany’s top young midfielders, but has not made a first-team breakthrough yet with the Bavarians. Rhein’s current deal ends in 2021 and Bayern Munich reportedly wants to extend the contract by one-year (per Sport Bild’s print edition):

Torben Rhein (18) is considered the next Thiago at the club. According to SPORT BILD, his expiring contract will be extended by one year.

“The next Thiago” is some lofty praise for a player who might only be Germany’s third best midfielder aged 18 or younger at the moment. Florian Wirtz looks every bit of a superstar with Bayer Leverkusen, while Bayern Munich’s own Jamal Musiala — who has yet to commit fully to Germany or England for international play — also looks special.

What a midfield that could be someday for Germany should all three players continue on their projected pathway.
