Bayern Munich defender David Alaba has not had the easiest stretch.
In the midst of a lengthy and tumultuous transfer saga, Alaba has been under the microscope of fans and pundits alike. Many feel as if Alaba’s performances have dipped since the 2019/2020 campaign ended, but the Austria international will not entertain the notion.
Alaba spoke frankly with Bild (behind the Bild+ paywall) and denies that his uncertain future has made his play slip.
“No, absolutely not,” Alaba said. “Personally, I don’t think things are going so badly for me this season and I haven’t changed my style of play compared to last year. I’ve said it many times: For me, the only thing that counts is another successful season with Bayern. We are still leading the table and I am sure that we will win the next games and, in the end, we will be top.”
Alaba used Bayern Munich’s loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach as an example that the problems his team is facing are fixable.
“With our style of play, we won a few titles last season and know we can play successfully,” Alaba said. “In top games like the one against Gladbach now, it often comes down to the little things. Defensive stability can only be achieved by a only through a cohesive team performance, and that’s why we try to work compactly with eleven men. At the moment, we’re not doing that as a team very well.”
While Alaba’s sentiment is sincere, it would be hard for any player in his situation to at least not be a little affected by his situation. Hopefully the Austrian and his mates can sort out their issues soon and get back to the treble-winning form they displayed last season.
