Initial reactions and observations
- Lucas Hernandez is great at center back. Let’s keep him there.
- Joshua Kimmich — what a player. Future captain of Bayern and Germany confirmed. Wish he could get a rest, though.
- Another game, another goal by Thomas Muller. Him and Kimmich were some of the best performers on the night, and they’re also the ones with the most work rate on the pitch. The fact that they keep putting these performances in despite the fatigue gripping the team is something else.
- Alphonso Davies was amazing again. Good to see him recover from the blip against Hoffenheim.
- Robert Lewandowski struggled to get involved — BVB did well cutting off his supply.
- Chris Richards had a decent cameo appearance at right-back, could he start against Hertha? Maybe Hansi Flick might not have a choice.
- Five trophies for Bayern in 2020 so far. Only Barcelona have ever won more in a single year. Can the Bavarians equal that record?
FT: Bayern Munich win 3-2!
81’ — GOAL! Kimmich makes it 3-2!
75’ — Substitution: Chris Richards comes on for Benjamin Pavard.
54’ — Goal. Erling Haaland equalizes for BVB. Bad news for Bayern.
52’ — Substitution: Serge Gnabry comes on for Kingsley Coman.
45’ — Second half kicks off!
Halftime observations and analysis
- Lucas Hernandez is great at center back. Play him there please.
- Robert Lewandowski has turned into Mr. Assist this season. Must think scoring is overrated.
- Bayern have been the better team, they should be leading by more.
- Alphonso Davies is playing much better after his poor performance against Hoffenheim.
- How many times has Kingsley Coman been fouled? Dortmund seem to be targeting him.
Halftime: Bayern lead 2-1.
38’ — Goal. Julian Brandt capitalizes on a mistake from the Bayern defense to slot one past Manuel Neuer.
31’ — GOAL! Thomas Muller makes it 1-0 from a beautiful cross by Alphonso Davies. Great game so far.
17’ — GOAL! Tolisso makes it 1-0 off a beautiful counter!
Kickoff — We are underway!
30 minutes until kickoff: If you were wondering where Leon Goretzka is...well, here you go:
ℹ️ @leongoretzka_ is out with a back problem. @MichaelCUISANCE and Sven #Ulreich both miss out, while @LeroySane19 and Tanguy #Nianzou are also injured.

Hopefully, Goretzka’s back pain is nothing serious.
One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! The dreaded lineup has appeared, Thomas Muller starts on the wing. Or could Alphonso Davies be on the wing? We’ll know when kickoff comes.

It’s time for another Supercup! Bayern Munich face Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena, with neither team feeling too great at the moment. With both teams having suffered devastating defeats in the league last weekend, Hansi Flick and Lucien Favre will be looking for a win to boost their confidence.
Bayern come into the game with some severe fatigue issues. After playing three games in the space of a week, including 120 minutes against Sevilla in the UEFA Supercup, the players are exhausted. However, the coach barely has any choice — he needs the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich, and Serge Gnabry to beat Dortmund. Leroy Sane and David Alaba are out with injury, which puts added pressure on a depleted squad.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Dortmund themselves will miss the services of Jadon Sancho and Roman Burki, who miss out due to a respiratory infection (not the coronavirus). If Bayern can keep BVB from running amok like Hoffenheim did, there’s a chance for this tired team.
It’s Bayern time.
