Well, that’s likely the end of the Sergino Dest saga. Reliable reports out of Barcelona (via Barca Blaugranes) and elsewhere in Europe confirm that the player has chosen the Catalans as his new club. Bayern Munich will now need to switch gears and find a replacement target. Luckily, they probably already had one lined up — Norwich City youngster Max Aarons.
According to Sky Sports, the Bavarians are probably going to make a play for Aarons in the coming days. There’s not much time left in the transfer window, so the prospect of overpaying becomes a very real one. Despite getting relegated, Norwich have zero reason to sell, because of the Premier League’s so-called “golden parachute”, i.e. the insane parachute payments clubs receive when being sent to the Championship.
Bayern won’t be able to sign Aarons uncontested either. The player reportedly has interest from AC Milan and Roma. While neither of those clubs have the same stature as Barcelona, the prospect of being a starter in Italy could sway the 20-year-old in their direction. That would be truly devastating for Bayern, as losing transfer targets left and right doesn’t look good after the club just won a treble. Is the board really going to let Hansi Flick go into the new season with such a thin squad? We hope not.
