With possibly his final goal in his final game for Bayern Munich, Javi Martinez strikes gold

Javi Martinez started the game on the bench but proved to be the match-winner in possibly his last game for Bayern.

Javi Martinez started the 2020 UEFA Super Cup like most of his games this past season: as a substitute on the bench. He ended it like a champion: entering the game in extra time in the 99th minute, Javi scored the decisive 2-1 goal. His time at Bayern Munich might be drawing to an end — Bild even reported he was already on his way to Athletic Bilbao last week — but he had one more high to reach before saying goodbye.

Here is the fateful scene that may have sent Javi off to Spain with one more title and Bayern back home with one more trophy for their expansive 2020 cabinet:

Kimmich’s corner kick is headed away by Fernando, but David Alaba catches the ball on his chest as he runs into the penalty area. Alaba manages a good shot off a half volley, but Bono is able to leap up and swat it away with both hands.

The ball hangs in the air, arching over Robert Lewandowski’s head. He turns and calmly watches over his shoulder (at 0:54) as Javi squares up and hammers the ball with his own head into the left corner out of Bono’s reach.

The team knows this may well be Javi’s final game for Bayern and almost certainly is his final goal. For Javi, it couldn’t have ended any better.
