Bayern Munich set to make a new bid for Sergino Dest, Barcelona in the mix (Updated)

Barca’s presence could make the deal harder to complete.

Bayern Munich want a new right-back, but their target is not easy to get. According to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, the Bavarians are set to make a new bid for Ajax youngster Sergino Dest. The American international is also wanted by Barcelona, who are ready to sell Nelson Semedo to Wolves. Selling Semedo would free up funds for the Catalans to make a move.

Here are the tweets in question, direct from Fabrizio’s twitter account:

If Barcelona are really interested in Dest, it doesn’t bode well for Bayern’s chances. Bayern Munich have been scouting the youngster for some time, and he even visited the club’s stadium to watch a game, back when that was still a thing people could do. That may sound like good news, but Dest is also a known admirer of Barca. If they want him, he could easily have his head turned.

In addition, the Catalans are more likely to offer him a guaranteed starting position, whereas at Bayern he would probably sit behind Benjamin Pavard in the pecking order. One thing working in Bayern’s favor right now is the fact that we are the incumbent Champions League winners, and Barca are a bit of a mess. Who knows where Dest’s career could go if he moves there? And if Leo Messi does leave next season, does he really want to be stuck at a post-Messi Barcelona?

Still, this seems like quite a difficult transfer for the Bayern bosses. If Ajax don’t budge on their asking price, we could lose out. That would be disastrous for the club. Hansi Flick has reportedly asked for reinforcements, among which a right-back is one of the top priorities. If the club wants to retain the treble, there might be no choice left but to overpay for once.

Update

Bayern are "confident", whatever that means.
