The German women’s team played Ireland this morning in the qualification round of UEFA Women’s Championship. Germany won the game 3-0, with goals by Marina Hegering, Dzsenifer Marosán, and Lea Schüller, but they suffered a serious loss in the person of Giulia Gwinn.
Half an hour into the game, the 21-year-old defender for Bayern Munich injured her right knee in a duel and was treated for several minutes on the pitch.

In the 35’ minute she was carried off the pitch on a stretcher in obvious pain and distress. A DFB spokeswoman stated at halftime that she had been brought to the hospital in Essen for closer evaluation.
Germany won their fifth of five games in Group I, taking the lead on their march toward qualifying for Euro 2022.
Head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said after the match, “We have a spotless record. I’m optimistic that we will not let anyone take first place away from us again.” She acknowledged that Gwinn’s injury looked serious: “That did not look good,” she said.
Gute und schnelle Besserung, Giulia!
