Last season in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich scored 100 goals in 34 games; however, did you know that wasn’t the Bavarians’ highest goal total in a single season? Way back in the 1971/72 season, Bayern dropped 101 goals on the Bundesliga, led by Gerd Müller’s 40 goals and Uli Hoeneß’s 13 goals. While last season’s group came close, can the 2020/21 squad finally hit that 102 goal mark?
Following Matchday 1’s breathtaking 8-0 massacre of Schalke at the Allianz Arena, I decided to bring back a feature that our old buddy grudnik used to run here at BFW. We’re going to track Bayern’s progress to breaking a seemingly unbeatable record. Let’s get to it.
2020/21 Season
Led by Serge Gnabry’s hat trick, Bayern romped to a big 8-0 victory over Schalke. Leon Goretzka, Robert Lewandowski, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, and Jamal Musiala also found the back of the net.
1971/72 Season
With second half goals from Paul Breitner and Franz Beckenbauer, Bayern dispatched Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-1. Franz Krauthausen scored the opening goal.
Head-to-Head Comparison - Matchday 1
Bayern 2020/21: 8 goals
Bayern 1971/72: 3 goals
There are few better ways that Bayern could’ve started the 2020/21 season than dropping EIGHT goals in the opener. A five goal head start after Matchday 1 is hard to beat.
