Starting from the 2020/21 season, Serge Gnabry will wear the No. 7 shirt for Bayern Munich.

The prolific winger was presented with the no. 22 shirt when he first arrived in Munich two years ago, and since then, has produced some memorable performances wearing it. His four-goal haul against Tottenham Hotspur and his braces against Chelsea and Olympique Lyon were all accomplished with the 22 on his back.

Now, however, he will be the newest owner of the coveted 7, previously worn by Franck Ribery. “I’m really looking forward to wearing this number in the future,” said Gnabry. “Franck has always thrilled the fans — that gives me even more motivation.”

Indeed, Ribéry experienced extreme highs during his career in Munich, winning the treble in 2013, as well as countless trophies before and after, and delighting fans every step of the way.

Both Ribéry and Arjen Robben left the club at the end of the 2018/19 season. The club initially wanted to keep their numbers vacant for the 19-20 season to honor the two veterans, but Robben’s no. 10 was taken by loanee Philippe Coutinho, with permission from the Dutchman himself. After Coutinho’s departure, the 10 has since been given to new arrival Leroy Sané. Now the 7 will also have a new owner.

With a treble under his belt already, there is no doubt that Gnabry will be motivated to win another wearing his new number. Let’s hope he carries on the legacy of the 7, and writes himself deeper into Bayern’s history books!
