Just two days ago, UEFA released their 2019/20 team of the season for the Champions League campaign. The 23-man roster was hand selected by UEFA’s “technical observers” and included 9 Bayern Munich players, justifiably so. The next highest represented teams were both PSG and RB Leipzig, who ad 3 representatives in the team. The defenders that were picked were actually all comprised of Bundesliga players aside from Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
Bayern were crowned Champions League champions with a 1-0 win over PSG in Lisbon, Portugal after a campaign that saw them win all 11 of their matches throughout the campaign, including the final.
The 9 Bayern players selected:
- Manuel Neuer
- Joshua Kimmich
- Alphonso Davies
- David Alaba
- Leon Goretzka
- Thiago Alcantara
- Thomas Muller
- Serge Gnabry
- Robert Lewandowski
There were so many highlights from Bayern’s historic Champions League run this season en route to the final:
- Lewandowski’s 4-goal match against Red Star Belgrade
- Serge Gnabry’s 4-goal performance in North London against Tottenham
- The 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge vs. Chelsea (brilliant team performance)
- The 8-2 against Barcelona, including braces from Muller and Philippe Coutinho
- Neuer’s trio of massive saves in the final against PSG
- Lewandowski finishing as the competition’s top goal scorer (15) and joint highest assists provider (6)
- Bayern scoring a total of 43 goals throughout the competition
Of course, it’s important to be objective, but the way this Bayern team has played this season, especially under Hansi Flick, it’s difficult for us to leave players out of the Champions League team of the season. Every player in Bayern’s squad played a part in helping Bayern reach the final and beat PSG. They had even set a record for becoming the best group stage winner in the history of the competition after winning all 6 matches:
6 games
