If Christian Früchtl had any internal doubt regarding his loan move to FC Nürnberg, Bayern Munich starting goalkeeper Manuel Neuer probably helped alleviate those concerns. In an interview with Bild, Früchtl disclosed that he and Neuer have grown close over the years and that the 34-year-old encouraged Früchtl to make the move to Der Club.
“Manu has always been my role model,” Früchtl said. “In the beginning I had a lot of respect and didn’t dare to say that much. We are now friends. Of course I learned a lot from him. For me he is the best goalkeeper in the world. He thinks my move to Nuremberg is good. It is the right step for me.”
With that encouragement, Früchtl has ventured to Nürnberg where he will do battle with Christian Mathenia for the starting goalkeeper position.
“I’m on loan for a year now and have no problems with him,” Früchtl said of Mathenia. “Ultimately, we have to push each other up.”
As far as being a fit with FC Nürnberg goes, Früchtl is sure his time with Bayern Munich has prepared him for a smooth transition.
“The coach wants to play football,” said Früchtl said. “I know that from Bavaria and is probably one of my strengths. There are actually no long balls.”
