It’s finally here. It’s gameday, or “Spieltag” auf Deutsch. Our FC Bayern play the French behemoths Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League 2020 Finale at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We here at BFW have decided to take a stab at how we believe the match will play out given the elite strengths of both squads.

Now look, I get it. PSG are an elite team. They have 2 of arguably the top 10 players in the world in Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. Toss in Ángel Di María and that’s one lethal trident. But after that, question marks appear. Is Veratti healthy enough to play in a meaningful way? What about their elite injured keeper Keylor Navas? There are a lot of questions, but I am simply biased and have faith in Hansi Flick. While Bayern and their high press have given up opportunities —and dont get me wrong PSG will score—, Bayern is relentless and I think that after a hectic first 15’-20’ Bayern will settle down and utterly dictate the game. Their high press and aggressive line that has been the major talking point proves to be less of a liability than people are thinking it will. PSG’s $400m + signings don’t bring them to the promised land. I believe we will be sharper than vs. Lyon. Onward to title number 6.

I genuinely feel it’s going to finish 3-1 Bayern. TRUST IN FLICK! I think Paris will nip a goal at some point catching us on our heels with the pace of Mbappé, Neymar and Di María, but I feel like we learned our lesson with high lines against Lyon. It worked against Barca, but had its risks, which showed vs Lyon. I just can’t see us not scoring. Our attack is so in sync and hungry in front of goal. I also think our midfield pivot of Goretzka/Thiago and/or Kimmich is stronger than Herrera/Gueye/Paredes or Verratti/Draxler. We will score...and more than 1. I’m calling a 3-1 final scoreline and big #6 for us!

The Bayern freight train rolls forward. PSG are a dangerous opponent but this team has faced quality and all have wilted under the pressure of Flick’s attack. The solidarity and professionalism of this team has been amazing. The quality throughout, superb. The meshing of all facets, seamless.

I expect the defense to be under duress from the counter attacks from PSG, but the defense will bend and not break. The speed and communication between Alaba and Davies will be the difference. Neuer will be a force. Lewandowski will score goals. And goals win matches.

I believe both teams will score relatively early on, and will score multiple goals. This is due to both teams playing very offensive systems and always creating many chances. The first 20 or so minutes, is where PSG will be most dangerous, as Bayern’s high line adapts into the game, and it is crucial that Bayern don’t go down by more than one goal within this period. Weather the initial storm, and chances of a win increase notably.

I believe Flick will, at least initially, have slightly more conservative tactics, dropping the high line a few meters, but keeping the principal of it. Hardly anything else will be changed. However, we’ll really be able to take control of the game in the last 15 of the first half, and the first 15 of the second. It’s shaping up to be an absolute corker of a game, and could very likely become a European classic. It’s the best final for a neutral in years! Two ultra attacking systems. Two heavy metal coaches. Two star attackers on both sides. Two excellent in personnel but vulnerable due to tactics back lines. I can’t wait!

I think Bayern have the defensive presence to put together another solid 90 minutes and hold out for the win. For me, the biggest question is on the offensive side and whether the attacking front can gel together a little better than they did against Lyon. Still, a 3-0 victory against the team that knocked out Juventus and Manchester City while not playing your best is incredibly impressive. This trophy is Bayern’s to lose.

Bayern Munich and PSG will both start the game in nervy fashion, both sides eager to start the scoring. This will give us a goal from both sides. But as the game settles down, Bayern will start to control the tempo and with their high intensity press, PSG are bound to make errors in midfield and defense, leading to chances that players like Gnabry and Müller will exploit. I’m calling dibs on Robert Lewandowski having a great outing, scoring 2, while one of Gnabry and Müller will grab one, plus a midfielder/defender contributing one. Manuel Neuer’s skills will also make the difference, and I’m counting on him to make at least 2 vital stops this game.

There is no doubt that PSG as a team can beat anybody on their day. While their path to the final has been easier than Bayern’s, they did face a challenge in the Round of 16 against Borussia Dortmund. Down 2-1 from the first leg, they came back to win the second, resiliently, without giving Dortmund much of a chance, 2-0. They were the better side against Atalanta and much more superior to Leipzig in the previous round.

They are worthy finalists. That being said, while Bayern is very likely to concede, PSG has not been tested against an offense of Bayern’s caliber where anybody can score. The unpredictability of Bayern’s game, coupled with the fact that the team is much more than Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller means Bayern will score against any team. This PSG defense is no exception.
