Jerome Boateng was subbed off for Niklas Süle to start the second half in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over Lyon that clinched their place in the Champions League final to face Paris Saint-Germain. Boateng was the first of five substitutions that Hansi Flick made in the win.

Lyon piled on the pressure in the opening stages of the match, but Boateng made several vital interceptions and blocks in Bayern’s box to deny the Ligue 1 side from finding the back of the net. He has injured himself before while sprawling himself out to make timely clearances, but Boateng never really pulled up with an apparent problem during the first half.

Speaking after the match, Flick confirmed that he replaced Boateng with Süle because, “Jerome had muscular problems,” has said (kicker). He added, however, that Boateng should be fine for the final on Sunday against PSG and will probably start.

Boateng has now been subbed off in all three of Bayern’s Champions League matches in Portugal, having sustained muscular problems in the 4-1 win over Chelsea and the 3-0 win over Lyon. As good as he’s been under Flick, Boateng is almost never able to go for a full 90 minutes, but that weakness has largely been neutralized by the fact that there can be five changes made. Boateng will certainly have a tall task alongside David Alaba in containing Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, and Angel Di Maria in the final third.
