Beckenbauer says Jogi Low must bring Thomas Muller Back to German national team

New, comments

Bayern’s number 25 was unceremoniously cut from the outfit in early 2019 but has displayed world class performances since his axing.

Thomas Muller has had his best ever season in 2019/20, becoming a key performer in Bayern Munich’s glorious resurgence under Hansi Flick. But things had not gone swimmingly for the German in his past few seasons. As recently as October 2019, he was largely a bench player for Bayern, and he had been axed from the German national team in March 2019.

At Bayern, he has reclaimed his starting spot, but he has still been looked over by coach Jogi Low for Germany — as the German bosses have repeatedly said that Muller isn’t going to return to the team.

However, many people think that Muller’s recent form has just been too good to not warrant selection or Germany. Franz Beckenbauer is among these people. Speaking to Bild+ (paywall), Beckenbauer gave his thoughts on the situation.

His views were very clear: that Muller should be reintegrated back in to the team. While acknowledging Muller’s recent Bayern struggles, the world cup winning player (and coach!) pointed to the German’s newfound influence at Bayern, his personality and his leadership, as reasons why Jogi Low should recall him.

Bild also spoke to a national team expert, Memhet Scholl. Surprisingly, Scholl thought that Muller would be recalled by the manager in the near future.

I think most people believe Muller should be allowed back in the side. Hopefully Low admits that he was wrong and recalls Muller. As shown by his MOTM performance vs FC Barcelona in the Champions League, he is simply too good not to select. It sure would be puzzling to not select one of the world’s best players for your side...
