Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has promised that there will be imminent consequences following the club’s investigation into allegations racism against a youth coach (Sky Germany). The evidence brought to light included screenshots of WhatsApp conversations, anonymous letters sent to the club from player’s parents, and references to cruel, unwarranted physical punishments for certain players.
Although Bayern initially dismissed the anonymous letters as a “private feud” between one person and the unnamed youth coach, Bayern launched an investigation after the WhatsApp chats surfaced. Now, Rummenigge told the media that the club’s internal investigation is almost complete and promised swift action.
Rummenigge said, “There will be imminent consequences. The business does not at all match the values that FC Bayern Munich represents.” Rummenigge added that the case “really angers me — I have to say that loud and clear — because it must not be forgotten: we are a club that has always opposed racism.”
The administrative and sporting directors of FC Bayern’s campus, Jochen Sauer and Holger Setiz, sent a letter in the past to player’s parents who were affected and asked if they could give them some specific verification into the matter. The letter also reiterated that FC Bayern condemns all forms of racism.
Local police in Munich have also launched their own investigation into the matter in coordination with the club. Between the club’s internal investigation and that of the police, hopefully all responsible parties will be identified and held accountable as Rummenigge has promised. There is absolutely no place for racism anywhere, ever.
