Bayern Munich’s reliable right-back, Benjamin Pavard, had to depart team training today after suffering an ankle injury.

This is what German football writer Maximilian Koch (Abendzeitung) had to say about the incident:

Scary second just now in FC Bayern’s training: defender Benjamin Pavard has to break off training. He was treated on his ankle and driven off the pitch in a golf cart. Coach Hansi Flick will probably be able to say at the press conference whether the Frenchman has suffered a serious injury.

Depending on the severity of the injury, the Frenchman may not be able to play in Bayern Munich’s Champions League ties next month. Bayern have Alvaro Odriozola as a backup at right-back, but whether the Bavarians trust him against Europe’s elite is debatable. Of course, Bayern also have Joshua Kimmich. However, the German has transitioned to an important centre-mid role in recent months and is unlikely to move back into defence.

We’ll update this story if Hansi Flick has anything to say about the injury in his press conference today.

Update: Flick confirms the injury, severity unknown

Hansi Flick confirmed the injury but said he did not yet have a diagnosis. We’ll have to wait a while longer before we learn how long Pavard will be sidelined.

Benjamin Pavard injures himself in training today. We have to wait for the examinations and don’t know for how long he’ll be out.

Sky Sport: Pavard out three weeks

Sky Sport’s Torben Hoffmann claims that according to their information Pavard will be out for three weeks. That definitely would rule him out of the upcoming match against Chelsea:

According to our information, Benjamin Pavard threatens to be out for up to three weeks! The central-defender [sic] rolled his left ankle! The Frenchman thus would not be available against Chelsea FC!

Bayern confirms: metatarsal ligament injury

The club has now confirmed Pavard’s injury. In a brief press release (FCBayern.com), the club described his injury as follows:

FC Bayern will have to do without Benjamin Pavard for the time being. The right-back of the German Rekordmeister had to break off team training on Sunday morning on account of an injury. A exhaustive examination by the medical department of FC Bayern diagnosed a ligament injury on his left tarsus.
