Lars Lukas Mai, a 20-year-old center-back for Bayern Munich II, will move to SV Darmstadt on loan next season to collect match experience. “Lasse” Mai was a key part of FC Bayern II’s title winning 3.Liga campaign. He has reached a point in his career where a step up to the next level of his professional career is necessary.

Bayern and Darmstadt made his loan public in roughly simultaneous press releases (FCBayern.com, sv98.de). Although there had been some talk of a purchase option included in the detail before it became public, the opposite appears to be the case: Mai notably extended his contract with Bayern an additional year, giving the Bavarians control until 2023.

Mai seemed genuinely excited about the move in his statement to the Lilies:

“I’m very happy that I’ll get the chance to prove myself in the 2.Bundesliga at SV Darmstadt 98 and develop both in footballing and in personal terms here. SV 98 is a great, familial club. Because the talks with the sporting officials were really super, I didn’t hesitate when the Lilies inquired. I’m looking forward to the season in Darmstadt and can’t wait to get going with my new team.”

Good luck in Darmstadt, Lasse!
