Bayern Munich have reportedly decided what the future holds for promising younger defender Lukas Mai. According to Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg, Mai will be playing in the 2.Bundesliga next season for SV Darmstadt. The deal is being finalized, but Mai is joining them on loan.
However, there is a possible option that will dishearten a lot of Bayern fans who’ve been looking at Mai as a future first team player. It’s possible that this loan will include an option to buy.
Mai is still under contract with Bayern through the summer of 2022.
If Pletterberg is correct and Bayern are considering putting an option-to-buy in the reported deal with Darmstadt, it may be our first real inkling of Bayern’s real feelings on Mai’s long-term prospects with the first team. Like Adrian Fein’s loans to Jahn Regensberg and Hamburg, you don’t loan a player with an option-to-buy if you plan on keeping them long-term.
