Lukas Podolski: Leroy Sane has not yet “reached the top level”

Podolski feels that Sane’s ceiling for potential is very high, but that he hasn’t reached it yet.

In a recent conversation with Sky Germany (via Goal), former Bayern Munich and German National Team forward Lukas Podolski said he feels that Leroy Sane still hasn’t reached his top level yet. Bayern completed the signing of Sane from Manchester City at the beginning of the month for 50-million Euros, ending what was a transfer saga that lasted as long as 18 months.

Sane will bolster a midfield at Bayern that’s already full of top class talent, but Podolski feels that the 24-year old isn’t quite at the “top level” yet. Of course, he’s missed a considerable amount of football while recovering from the cruciate ligament tear he suffered last August, but he still needs some time to gain more experience for the both club and country before he’s at his highest gear in Podolski’s eyes: “They get the best players [at Bayern] and Sane is a great player. [But] of course he still has further potential. He has not yet reached the top level. He still needs a bit more experience, a few more seasons. He needs to play regularly with the national team and win a European championship or a World Cup.”

Sane is not eligible for Bayern for the remainder of the Champions League campaign, but he’s expected to be with the squad when they begin preparations for it. The majority of Bayern’s squad are currently enjoying some well deserved time off after securing a domestic double, but Sane will surely be chomping at the bit to get on the pitch with them at Sabener Strasse.

Hopefully for Sane’s sake, he’s able to stay fully fit and healthy through pre-season training so that he’s ready to be involved when the next Bundesliga season starts. It’s assumed that he’d be directly inserted to the starting lineup if he’s 100% fit, but time will tell if that’s going to be the case come time for the start of the 2020/2021 campaign.

Podolski also recognized how well Bayern have been performing under Hansi Flick since Niko Kovac was dismissed; “You can see how they perform under him. Hansi Flick has done a great job.”
