This just in, according to a new report by Bild (paywalled, naturally), a number of juicy details about the Leroy Sane transfer have been revealed. Chief among them is his potential jersey number — the winger will be given the #10 upon joining Bayern Munich from Manchester City. Previously worn by club legend Arjen Robben, the current owner of the jersey is Barcelona loanee Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian could be given another number after Sane is officially presented.
Given that Coutinho is only on loan from Barcelona for another two months, this probably isn’t too big of a deal. The #10 jersey never really became something he could call his own. It is interesting to note that Sane prefers the #10 over the #7, previously worn by Franck Ribery. Bild’s report claims that it was his “explicit wish.” Does he see himself as a potential Robben successor? If so, Sane has a lot to live up to.
The #10 and #7 jerseys are probably the most coveted jersey numbers amongst footballers, for both prestige and marketing reasons. Every big club has had a top player wearing one of those numbers. Sane donning the #10 is good news for Adidas (Bayern’s kit supplier) and whoever gets to sponsor him in the future. There were already reports that Nike, Adidas, and Puma were locked in a bidding war over his impending move to Bayern. Now that it’s all but a reality, having the #10 only boosts Sane’s image as a star in the eyes of the fans.
That’s a lot of pressure for one player. Let’s hope he’s ready for what it entails.
