KIT LEAK: FC Bayern’s new Champions League kit for 2020/21

Bayern’s “Back in Black” statement for next season isn’t what a lot of people might be expecting.

As the 2019/20 season draws to a close, it is high time for next season’s kits to being being leaked and released. Bayern Munich have already released their new home kit and have worn it for the past few weeks, debuting it in the DFB-Pokal semifinal against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Now, their Champions League (third) kit has been leaked, and may we just say that it is not what you would expect. Here is the leaked Champions League kit for next season:

If you’ve been keeping tabs on Bayern’s kit leaks, you’ll have known that next season’s Champions League kit was going to be black for the first time since 2014/15. While the base color is indeed black, Adidas has splashed the front of the jersey with large red diamonds, ranging from bright to dark red. The club logo meanwhile is a monochromatic white.

The underlying motif is obviously the Bavarian flag, but fans may think, despite the reference to the club’s city, a bit of subtlety might have helped, especially considering the last time that Bayern’s Champions League shirt had any sort of prominent pattern was a whopping six years ago in 2013/14.

This kit looks more like a pre-match or warm-up shirt than a match kit. It is not uncommon for pre-match kits to have more dazzling patterns than the actual kits themselves (just ask South Korea at the 2018 World Cup). Indeed, this particular kit also draws a lot of resemblance to a certain pre-match kit (2017/18), shown below.

Considering the actual training top for next season is probably what a lot of fans expected of the Champions League kit (all black with white and red stripes on the shoulders), it will be interesting to see what fans think of this leak. Some opinions are already saying that they should swap the training kit and the Champions League kit.
