In the last couple of months, there has been a lot of talk about the future of some Bayern Munich stars. Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez will be both out of contract in the summer of 2021, and it is still not fully clear whether we will see them in Bayern’s jersey next season. In a press conference held before Bayern’s match against Freiburg, Hansi Flick addressed the soon-to-be out of contract players and talked about their future.
It is no secret that Jerome Boateng was edging for an exit last summer, and he was also linked with an exit in the winter transfer window. But when Hansi Flick took over, Boateng’s form dramatically improved. Now, Boateng is a starter in almost every game and resembles the player who won the World Cup.
Flick appreciates Boateng and had this to say about his future (Sport1): “David [Alaba] and Jerome are doing very well. He’s [Boateng] in brilliant condition. That’s the basis for why we’re set up so well defensively. It’s obvious that you want such experienced players in your own ranks. I can’t say what Jerome has in mind. He’s at a certain age. Perhaps he might want another new chance with a transfer. He has a year on his contract left. If he stays, I won’t be sad.”
The situation with Javi is a bit more complicated. He had problems with injuries throughout this year’s campaign and lost his position in the first eleven. With Bayern’s possible signing in Tanguy Kouassi, Martinez might play an even smaller role. Hansi Flick said (Sport1), “When Javi plays, he’s in it with all his heart. You like to see that as a coach. He does the team good with his experience. He’s at a certain age and knows that the competition here is fierce. He has to decide that. We’re not discussing these things in so much detail at the moment yet”
Time will only tell whether this will be their last season at Bayern, but both Boateng and Martinez have shown that they can still play on the highest level.
