Thiago Alcantara still has not signed a contract extension with Bayern Munich, but Hansi Flick has made it clear he absolutely wants the midfielder to stay at Bayern. There has been talk that Thiago and his wife are debating a return to Spain and his minutes have been threatened by Leon Goretzka’s solid form since the Bundesliga resumed.

In his pre-match press conference previewing Bayern’s match against SC Freiburg, Flick was asked about Thiago’s contract situation and responded by saying he knows the club absolutely wants him to stay (Sport1): “Thiago is an exceptional player, an outstanding footballer. He gives every team a fantastic playing level and is very intelligent. I’d love for him to stay here. He and the club know that. I’d like for him and [David] Alaba to be with us next year. We’re optimistic that it’ll work. You never know in sports, however, how things turn out. Both players are top, top players.”

The club is adamant on extending contracts for both Thiago and Alaba as both of their contracts are set to expire next summer. Alaba’s case seems to be a bit stronger at this current juncture since his father and agent, Pini Zahavi, are reportedly travelling to Munich to help finalize contract negotiations. For Thiago, the case isn’t as strong, but Flick’s affirmation in the press conference seems to suggest that Bayern is more confident in wanting him to stay than SportBild had claimed earlier this week. The German outlet had reported that Bayern was increasingly open to the idea of a summer transfer away from Munich for Thiago, but with Flick’s comments, that doesn’t really seem to be the case.

Ideally, things will all be sorted before Bayern resumes Champions League competition. Having both Thiago and Alaba extended by then would be a huge sigh of relief for Bayern. The pair of veterans are integral to Bayern’s continued success.
