The Curious Case of Lucas Hernandez at Bayern

Lucas has been our record signing at 80 Million and has had an injury riddled first year at the club which has sparked a debate on his ability to play for Bayern especially after Alaba took over at LCB. But is he truly that poor?

Let us Analyze

Alaba vs Lucas: Lucas's LCB position has been taken over by Alaba who has given a really strong performance. But Alaba however good he is, is no match for Lucas's defensive attributes. If the match against Foals taught us anything it was that the Alaba-Boa CB partnership depends a lot on our midfield and less on its own.

Time and again I have seen comments about how Alaba's distribution is better than Lucas's which although true does not make any sense.

For example: You have to buy a new pant for your office. You would want one which is going to match with your shirt and is not expensive either. Now lets say a particular kind of pants exist which are flexible enough for one to play football in them. Would your preference be them or the former. Obviously the former if the pants are flexible that would be additional perk but certainly not the core reason.

Similarly primary CBs can be divided into 2 types:

  • The strong and tall ones with awesome defensive attributes and a strong aerial presence like Sule, Van Dijk, Hummels stc.
  • The small sturdy, quick, dirty ones with brilliants defensive attributes like Lucas, Gomez .

Now every CB can have an additional perk for Lucas it is his dribbling. Now id we shift Lucas back to CB and Alaba to LB with rotation from Davies among the three makes perfect sense. Some might argue we lose our distribution from the back but a team of Muller, Thiago, Kimmich, Gnabs can it ever lack creativity?

Now for the LB: Alaba vs Davies

Lucas does not make it here because he is from Atletico where Benji would qualify as a wingback and LB is like that in the old days. Personally I would go with Alaba because he is the better LB many might point out Davies's recent success but his lack of positional sense does work against lesser opponents but against Mbappe, Sterling it would be harmful as they themselves are fast enough so Alaba should be our first choice.

Last but not the least

Lucas was sad about his substitution. Players being angry is one thing but sad might send a player into the wrong zone. Lucas gave his best but was not able to do the best in his position even though it was largely on the inability on the midfield it would make a player like him work even more which is good in training session but when given the chance he would overextend himself in a bid to prove his talent and get injured losing the momentum. Flick should give him a couple of games at CB now that the Bundesliga is more or less wrapped up.
