The Frauen Bundesliga made their return to the field this weekend, and Bayern Munich kicked off with a mighty important 3-0 victory over Hoffenheim. The win gives second place Bayern a four point cushion over Hoffenheim for the Bundesliga’s final spot in the Champions League.

Despite the big scoreline, it was a tough match throughout, and Bayern’s three goals did not come until the 84th, 87th, and 90th minutes. The opener finally came from Kathrin Hendrich after Carina Wenniger knocked Verena Schweers’s free kick back across the penalty area.

Three minutes later, Jovana Damnjanovic put Bayern up 2-0 after outrunning everybody to a ball poked through the backline by Linda Dallmann. Then, in the 90th minute, Lina Magull put the finishing touches on things with a beautiful free kick to make it 3-0 and cement the win.

“We needed a little to come into the game. You could notice from that our nervousness after the long break. But at now point during the game did I have the feeling that we could lose the game,” coach Jens Scheuer said. “At halftime I said that we’d win the game 2-0, because I was convinced that we’d be rewarded for the great efforts we had made.”

Bayern XI: Benkarth - Hendrich, Wenninger, Demann, Schweers - Lohmann (70. Leupolz), Magull - Gwinn, Dallmann, Simon (67. Beerensteyn) - Islacker (80. Damnjanović)

Bayern will return to the field next Sunday June 7, away to Turbine Potsdam.
