With the Bundesliga set to return this coming weekend after a two month COVID-19, the attention of Germany (and, quite frankly, the world) will be tuned in to watch the first major sports league take to the field. You would think that rights holders around the world are salivating at the prospect of getting a live sport back on TV.
In Germany, Sky Sports has announced that they will be showing Matchday 26 and Matchday 27 on their free channel Sky Sports News HD, per Welt. This includes all Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga games.
Over in the United States, however, Fox Sports is taking a less-than-generous approach to games. Their free broadcast channel will not be airing a game this weekend, with all of the games being shuffled to their two cable channels or their separate streaming service which is an additional cost. None of the 2.Bundesliga games are scheduled to air on TV, as usual.
Strangely, there was also zero promotion for the opportunity to air one of the first live sports broadcast from Fox. Sure, there’s another week before the games actually air, so we could see some movement in that department. However, with ESPN set to take the Bundesliga rights beginning with next season, perhaps Fox is just throwing in the towel?
