SkySport has revealed that Dayot Upamecano will not make the publicized switch from RB Leipzig to Bayern Munich this summer. Instead, the talented French defender will extend his contract with Leipzig by one additional year, thereby ending it in 2022. According to Sky Infos, the contract extension is already prepared and will also include a buy-out clause.
This will reduce all chances of Upamecano joining another club in the summer of 2021. The 21-year-old has faith in RB Leipzig, viewing the Saxony based club as the place for him to elevate his development. Upamecano believes that a move this summer might come too early for the benefit of his career.
This turn of events is unfortunate for Bayern Munich. It looked for a while that Upamecano favored a move to the Bavarian giants instead of moving outside of Germany. Although that may still be the case, the chances of it happening this summer have been dramatically reduced. It remains to be seen what the new buy-out clause will be and if it will be different from Upamecano’s current €60 million release clause, but it could mean that his transfer value will increase in a year.
