Bayern Munich has announced that it has extended the contract of Jochen Sauer, the director of its youth academy, the FC Bayern Campus, until the end of June 2023. Sauer has been in charge of youth development at Bayern since he was hired from RB Salzburg in 2017.
The club has been very pleased with Sauer’s management. Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic described Sauer’s hiring as “a stroke of luck for FC Bayern, but also for Jochen” (FCBayern.com).
“With him in charge, we have the great opportunity to implement our vision in the long term — the vision that FC Bayern will continue to develop players from its own youth development programme for the first team. We need this for our club culture, but also for financial reasons. I am very pleased that we are working with Jochen on a long-term basis,” Salihamidzic said.
Sauer said he was “very pleased we are continuing our cooperation.” He cited the promotion of Bayern II to the 3.Liga as a major step forward in the club’s ambition to train players for the first team, by “reducing the competitive gap to the first team and giving talents experience in a professional league.”
The next phase of the project, Sauer continued, is “to make it possible for our best youth players to advance to the professional squad and to receive further training there.”
